Skincare Ingredient Dictionary

As a lifelong skincare fanatic, I have always been fascinated by ingredient lists, reading them to work out why the products I love actually work. For anyone similarly inclined, this dictionary explains what every ingredient in the MATER range is and does, and why it was chosen. Each entry also notes which shade of natural it is, as set out in The Truth Behind Natural Skincare: A Guide to Understanding Skincare Ingredients.

A

Abyssinian (Crambe Abyssinica) Seed Oil

A lightweight, silky plant oil rich in long-chain fatty acids that gives beautiful slip and a soft-focus shine without any heaviness.

Allantoin

An underrated, nature-identical multitasker with strong soothing, healing and anti-irritation properties. It is also a gentle exfoliant, helping humectants bind to the skin and hydrate more effectively.

Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis) Leaf Extract

A classic soother, used here as a natural powder. It calms and hydrates, and helps skin feel comfortable and cared for.

Alkanna Tinctoria Root (Alkanet)

A completely natural root, simply ground into a powder. It is naturally red in colour, but at the higher pH of a formula it turns purple, which is nature's own magic. It is used in tiny amounts for a soft natural colour rather than any synthetic dye.

Alpha-Glucan Oligosaccharide (Prebiotic)

Food for your skin's good bacteria. A healthier microbiome means a stronger barrier, which is the foundation of that plump, resilient glow.

Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer

A texture and stability ingredient that gives RISE TO RADIANCE its silky, fresh gel feel and keeps the formula beautifully uniform.

Apricot (Prunus Armeniaca) Kernel Oil

A deeply nourishing oil that absorbs easily and is especially soothing on irritated skin. Rich in vitamins A, C and E and essential fatty acids, wonderful for sensitive and ageing skin.

Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate (Vitamin C)

An oil-soluble, exceptionally stable form of Vitamin C that brightens and supports collagen while working gently, without the irritation or morning sensitivity traditional Vitamin C can bring overnight. A note worth making: Vitamin C is so present in nature and in the foods we eat that you would expect it to be natural in skincare, but most Vitamin C used in skincare is in fact synthetic.

Avena Sativa (Colloidal Oat) Kernel Flour

Finely milled oats, long trusted to calm, comfort and soften. Helps skin wake calm and even.

Baobab (Adansonia Digitata) Oil

A rich, nourishing oil from the African "tree of life", high in fatty acids and vitamins to protect and replenish delicate skin and lips.

Bakuchiol

Known as nature's retinol, a natural compound from the seeds of the Psoralea corylifolia plant. It offers anti-ageing benefits comparable to retinol, but without the irritation. It is also considered safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. And unlike retinol, it does not cause photosensitivity, so it can be worn day or night.

Bakuchi (Psoralea Corylifolia) Oil

The whole bakuchi oil, used alongside pure bakuchiol so the total bakuchiol content sits above 1%, for smoothing and renewing benefits with excellent tolerance.

Benzyl Alcohol, Dehydroacetic Acid & Aqua (natural preservative)

A naturally derived preservative blend, essential in any product containing water to prevent bacterial and fungal growth. It is ECOCERT and COSMOS compliant. I WOKE UP LIKE THIS also uses Geogard ECT, another naturally derived, ECOCERT-approved preservative made up of Benzyl Alcohol, Salicylic Acid, Glycerin and Sorbic Acid.

Betaine

A very gentle, eco-friendly humectant, an amino acid made from sugar beet. It balances moisture, improves the look of skin over time and helps soften the appearance of fine lines.

Bisabolol

A prized natural soother, traditionally extracted from candeia wood, with anti-inflammatory and calming properties that help skin wake settled and refreshed.

Borage (Borago Officinalis) Seed Oil

An exceptional source of fatty acids, including high levels of gamma-linolenic acid (Omega 6), making it excellent for dry, irritated, inflamed or mature skin.

Brassica Alcohols

A natural, palm-free alternative to common fatty alcohols like cetyl and cetearyl alcohol, derived from the waxes of cabbage-family plants. Gives structure and a soft skin feel.

Butylene/Ethylene/Styrene Copolymer

Cacay (Caryodendron Orinocense) Seed Oil

A luxurious anti-ageing oil naturally rich in vitamins A (naturally occurring retinol) and E, said to contain three times more retinol than rosehip. Easily absorbed, non-comedogenic and non-irritating.

Candelilla (Euphorbia Cerifera) Wax

A plant wax that gives structure and a protective, cushioning finish to lip formulas, a vegan alternative to beeswax.

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride

A light, silky emollient derived from coconut and glycerin that melts effortlessly into skin and helps dissolve makeup and sunscreen. MATER uses only the palm-free type.

Caprylyl Glycol

A gentle, naturally derived humectant that hydrates and also boosts the efficacy of the preservative system.

Castor (Ricinus Communis) Seed Oil

A rich, humectant-loving oil, cold-pressed from castor seeds, that draws in moisture and deeply conditions even the driest lips while giving a beautiful cushioned shine.

Ceramides (NP, AP, EOP)

Your skin's natural "mortar". They fill the gaps between skin cells to lock moisture in and keep irritants out, essential for hydration that actually lasts and for a resilient barrier.

Charcoal (Activated Charcoal) Powder

A gentle purifier that absorbs excess oil and helps draw out impurities for a thorough, deep cleanse.

Coco Caprylate

A natural, coconut-derived emollient with a lightweight, non-greasy, fast-absorbing feel. Non-comedogenic and non-irritating, a lovely natural alternative to silicones. MATER only ever uses the coconut-derived option, never palm.

Coco-Caprylate/Caprate

A close cousin of coco caprylate, a light plant-derived emollient that gives slip and a silky, non-greasy finish.

CoQ10 (Ubiquinone / Coenzyme Q10)

A naturally occurring antioxidant found in every cell of the body that declines with age. It helps protect against free radical and UV damage, supports elasticity and firmness and can help reduce redness.

Cranberry (Vaccinium Macrocarpon) Seed Oil

A light oil with an exceptionally high level of essential fatty acids plus polyphenols and phytosterols, making it a potent antioxidant. Sustainably upcycled from the food and beverage industry's natural biowaste.

Essential Oils

Where a MATER product carries a natural scent, it comes from carefully chosen essential oils, never artificial fragrance, and the full blend is always declared on the product page. Across the range these include Bulgarian Lavender, Geranium and Rose Geranium, Palmarosa, Frankincense, Carrot Seed, Ylang Ylang, Sweet Orange, Lemongrass, Petitgrain, Copaiba resin, Patchouli, Vetiver and Myrrh. Beyond scent, many bring their own soothing, balancing and skin-loving benefits.

Evening Primrose (Oenothera Biennis) Oil

A classic barrier oil rich in gamma-linolenic acid, prized for calming dry, sensitised and mature skin and supporting suppleness.

Ethylene/Propylene/Styrene Copolymer

Glycerin

One of the most common and most powerful humectants, found in most moisturisers and in the creams doctors prescribe for dry and eczema-prone skin. Skin-identical and invaluable in a hydrating product. MATER uses only palm-free vegetable / vegan glycerine.

Gotu Kola (Centella Asiatica) Extract

A cellular botanical extract from a herb central to traditional Chinese, Indonesian and Ayurvedic medicine. Anti-inflammatory and healing, it calms irritation and improves elasticity and firmness for a more youthful, radiant complexion.

Hemp (Cannabis Sativa) Seed Oil, New Zealand grown

Honey Extract

Hyaluronic Acid / Sodium Hyaluronate

A powerful humectant, also present in our own skin, that boosts absorption of water into the skin to hydrate and plump. Often over-hyped as a miracle ingredient, but a genuinely excellent addition to any hydrating formula. Sodium hyaluronate is the stable salt form.

Hydrogenated Castor Oil

A castor-derived wax that gives lip formulas body and a protective, moisture-locking cushion.

Hydrogenated Polyisobutene

A clear, cushioning emollient that gives LIP ORACLE Glow its glossy, comfortable, non-sticky shine and long wear.

Hydrosol (Floral Water)

Rather than plain water, we use floral hydrosols, made by distilling fresh flowers, for extra skin benefits and a beautiful natural scent. IWULT uses a Rose, Neroli, Lavender and Kanuka hydrosol blend.

Kaolin (Clay)

A gentle clay that draws out impurities and absorbs excess oil without stripping moisture. The kaolin MATER uses is a Brazilian purple clay.

Kawakawa (Macropiper Excelsum)

A native New Zealand plant with a rich range of bioactive compounds (flavonoids, phenols, terpenoids) that soothe and heal, reduce inflammation and protect against oxidative stress. In both YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE and the Green Goddess cleansing balm, hand-harvested kawakawa leaves are cold-infused in New Zealand hemp seed oil.

Kokum (Garcinia Indica) Seed Butter

Lactic Acid

A skin-identical alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) and part of the skin's Natural Moisturising Factor. It can be used for gentle exfoliation, and in the MATER serums it is included to bring the formula to the ideal pH for skin.

Liquorice Root (Glycyrrhiza Glabra) Extract

A cellular botanical extract from one of the world's oldest herbal remedies. Glycyrrhizin is a calming antioxidant ideal for reactive, blemished skin, while glabridin helps reduce hyperpigmentation and brighten the complexion.

Meadowfoam (Limnanthes Alba) Seed Oil

Mica

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane / Dimethyl Sulfone)

Pomegranate (Punica Granatum) Seed Oil (Organic)

Rosehip (Rosa Canina) Seed / Fruit Oil

Rosemary (Rosmarinus Officinalis) Leaf Extract

A natural antioxidant that protects the formula from oxidation while helping to calm the skin.
